    K-Rend Certified

    K-Rend Certified Installers

Energy Luxe is a certified K-Rend installer serving Greater Manchester and Lancashire. We apply premium, through-coloured silicone renders — from preparation to finish coat — backed by up to 30 years of BBA-approved guarantees.

    What is K-Rend?

K-Rend is the UK and Ireland's largest silicone render manufacturer, with over 30 years of experience. Their products carry the BSI Kitemark to BS EN 998:2016 and BS EN 15824, and many systems include a 30-year guarantee backed by the BBA and NSAI.

Unlike traditional sand-and-cement render, K-Rend is through-coloured — the pigment runs all the way through the material, not just on the surface. That means no painting, no peeling, and a consistent finish that lasts 15–25 years with minimal maintenance.

K-Rend pricing: what does it cost?

K-Rend rendering typically costs £40–£80 per m² fully installed, depending on property condition, access, and product choice. Here's what to expect for common property types in the North West:

    • 3-bed semi (3 walls, ~60–80 m²): £4,000–£6,000 fully installed
    • 3-bed detached (4 walls, ~100–120 m²): £6,000–£9,000 fully installed
    • 4-bed detached (4 walls, ~130–160 m²): £8,000–£12,000 fully installed
    • Materials only: £25–£35 per m² (render, base coat, mesh, beads, primers)
    • Labour: typically £250–£300 per day per renderer
    • All prices include scaffolding, preparation, and waste removal

    What affects the price?

No two rendering jobs are the same. These are the main factors that move your quote up or down:

    • Wall condition — poor substrates, crumbling mortar, or existing render that needs stripping add preparation time and cost (£5–£10/m² extra)
    • Access and scaffolding — taller properties or difficult access (conservatories, extensions blocking walls) increase scaffold hire
    • Product choice — standard K-Rend Silicone TC is mid-range; premium thin coat or lime renders cost more per m²
    • Colour — standard colours (20+ options) are included; bespoke colours may carry a small surcharge
    • Architectural details — ashlar cuts, quoins, raised bands around windows and doors add labour but create a premium finish
    • Insulation — adding external wall insulation (EWI) beneath the render significantly increases cost but improves energy efficiency

The rendering process: what to expect

A full K-Rend installation on a typical 3-bed semi takes 5–8 working days from scaffold up to scaffold down. Here's the step-by-step process:

Day 1–2: Scaffolding erected, existing surfaces prepared — loose render removed, cracks repaired, substrate cleaned and levelled. Stainless steel beads and mesh applied to all edges, corners, and around windows and doors.

    • Day 2–3: Base coat applied (K-Rend Basecoat, 16–18mm thick in 1–2 passes). Scraped flat when thumb-nail firm, typically the next day
    • Day 3–5: Base coat cures. On new-build substrates, a minimum 14-day cure is recommended; on retrofit work with stable substrate, shorter cure times apply
    • Day 5–7: Primer applied, followed by the finish coat (e.g. Silicone TC at 1.5–3mm). Finished by elevation to avoid lap marks
    • Day 7–8: Detail work, clean-up, scaffold removal. Full cure takes 48 hours — protect from heavy rain during this window

    Disruption: what homeowners should know

Rendering is an external job, so your home remains fully liveable throughout. That said, there are a few things to plan for:

    • Scaffolding blocks access to parts of your garden and may restrict driveway use for 1–2 weeks
    • Some noise and dust during preparation — particularly if old render or pebbledash is being removed
    • Trades on site 6–8 hours per day during the project
    • Garden furniture, bins, and plants near walls should be moved beforehand
    • Interior of the house is unaffected — no disruption inside

K-Rend vs traditional render vs pebbledash

Most homeowners considering K-Rend are replacing tired sand-and-cement render or outdated pebbledash. Here's how the options compare:

    • Sand-and-cement render: cheapest upfront (£25–£45/m²) but cracks easily, needs painting every 5–7 years, and can trap moisture. Lifespan 10–15 years
    • Pebbledash: durable aggregate finish (£30–£50/m²) but looks dated, traps dirt and algae between stones, and is difficult to repair neatly. Lifespan 20+ years if maintained
    • K-Rend silicone render: mid-range cost (£40–£80/m²), through-coloured so no painting needed, breathable, weather-resistant, and self-cleaning properties reduce algae growth. Lifespan 15–25 years
    • Long-term value: K-Rend saves £2,000–£5,000+ over 20 years compared to sand-and-cement when you factor in repainting, crack repairs, and maintenance costs

Can K-Rend go over existing render or pebbledash?

It depends on the condition of the existing surface. K-Rend can be applied over stable, well-bonded existing render — but only if the substrate is sound. If the existing render is cracking, hollow-sounding when tapped, or pulling away from the wall, it must be removed first.

For pebbledash, the stones and underlying render usually need to be stripped back to a clean, stable substrate. While this adds to the cost and timeline, it ensures the new K-Rend system bonds properly and lasts its full lifespan. We always carry out a thorough substrate assessment before quoting.

    Does rendering need planning permission?

In most cases, no. Re-rendering an existing house falls under Permitted Development Rights (Part 1, Class A) as a repair or maintenance improvement, so no planning application is needed.

However, you should check with your local council if your property is in a conservation area, is a listed building, or if the new render significantly changes the appearance of the property (e.g. a dramatic colour change visible from a public road). Building Regulations approval may also apply if you're adding external wall insulation beneath the render.

    Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about K-Rend rendering:

    • How long does K-Rend last? — 15–25 years with minimal maintenance. Many K-Rend products carry a 30-year BBA-backed guarantee
    • Does K-Rend crack? — All render can crack if the substrate moves. K-Rend's silicone formulation is more flexible than sand-and-cement, reducing the risk. Mesh reinforcement at stress points prevents most cracking
    • Can I change the colour later? — Yes, K-Rend can be painted over with masonry paint if you want a change. But the through-colour finish means you shouldn't need to for 15+ years
    • Is K-Rend breathable? — Yes. K-Rend silicone renders are vapour-permeable, allowing moisture to escape from the wall while repelling rainwater on the surface
    • What about algae and staining? — K-Rend's silicone technology includes hydrophobic properties that resist algae and biological growth. Rain naturally cleans the surface over time
    • Can I get K-Rend on a new-build extension? — Absolutely. K-Rend is ideal for extensions, garden rooms, and new-build work. We often combine it with ground screw foundations for a complete finish
